The Tourist Visa Checklist: Five Things to Get Right Before You Apply

Tourist visa applications are usually refused for boring reasons: a missing document, an itinerary that does not hold together, or finances that do not match the trip. The good news is that all three are fixable before you apply. Here is the checklist we run through with every traveller.

1. An itinerary that tells one consistent story

Your dates, bookings, leave letter and cover letter should all describe the same trip. If your application says ten days but your hotel bookings cover six, that inconsistency is what gets noticed. Build the itinerary first, then let every other document match it.

2. Proof you can afford this trip

Officers look at whether the trip cost is realistic against your bank balance and income — not just whether there is money in the account today. A large deposit that appeared last week raises more questions than a modest balance with a steady history. Keep your statements clean, and be ready to explain any recent large credits.

3. Proof you will come back

This is the heart of most tourist visa decisions. Strong ties to home can include stable employment with approved leave, a business you run, property, family responsibilities, or ongoing studies. Include evidence of these ties rather than only asserting them.

4. The paperwork itself

  • Passport validity well beyond your travel dates, with blank pages
  • Confirmed (and refundable, where possible) flight and hotel reservations
  • Travel insurance where the destination requires or recommends it
  • Invitation letter and host documents, if visiting family or friends
  • A short, factual cover letter tying everything together

5. Honest answers, every time

Never submit a booking you intend to cancel behind the officer’s back, and never hide a previous refusal — refusals are recorded, and concealing one is treated far more seriously than the refusal itself.

If you would rather have professionals assemble the file, our tourist and visitor visa service covers the itinerary, cover letter, bookings and the complete application. Request a call back and we will assess your trip honestly before you spend anything.
